Beyond The Family Business Podcast

Hosted by Luke Hansen-MacDonald, a second-generation family business leader, this podcast interviews Canadian family enterprise leaders to unpack candid lessons, hard-won successes, and the challenges behind the headlines. Each episode explores core family business themes—from entrepreneurship and succession to philanthropy and governance—featuring voices from both first-generation founders and next-gen leaders.

Born and raised in Halifax, Luke is a second gen leader from the Hansen-MacDonald Family. He grew up around his family business, Clearwater Seafoods, which sold in 2021 in the largest First Nations transaction in Canadian history. Luke has spent his life working in many different facets of his family’s business—including offshore fishing vessels and leading the automated machinery business. He now works day-to-day with his mother, father, and brother, and is President of HanMac Capital, the family’s single-family office.

As a leader in a single-family office, Luke understands the intricacies of family enterprise and the FO ecosystem–as well as the challenges and the strategies required to successfully manage succession, wealth stewardship, and governance. Luke spends his time between the family’s diversified investment portfolio, personal affairs, and charitable activities.

Luke’s experiences have led to his latest project, “Beyond the Family Business,” a vodcast in which he and his guests explore lessons, strategies, and stories from the world of family enterprise. Luke speaks with top Canadian business leaders and does not shy away from tricky topics, such as family conflict and the sometimes-difficult dynamics of succession and wealth.
