The days are long, dark and cold, and this can be a difficult time of year for Canadians and their emotional and psychological well-being. It’s a good time, then, to recognize the importance of mental health by raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek help.

That applies to those our society typically deems “successful,” too—the wealthy, the accomplished, the high performers. Successful individuals are often viewed as “having it all together,” but, in fact, mental health issues are prevalent in the business community, from executives to advisors to the clients they serve. Nor are wealthy families immune to emotional and psychological struggles. All socioeconomic groups can face stress, depression and anxiety, and the biggest roadblocks to effective treatment are often stigma, shame and guilt—barriers that successful and wealthy individuals might be even more likely to confront than others.

On January 17, 2025, Canadian Family Offices (CFO) in partnership with Healthing.ca, will present a one-hour panel at 11 a.m. (EST) that explores these challenges.

It will feature two mental health experts from The Residence at Homewood: Dr. Ben McCutchen, Chief of Psychiatry, who provides assessment and treatment services to adults experiencing a range of difficulties including mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, trauma-related disorders, and psychosis; and Paul Obermeyer, RN (Treatment Consultant), who brings more than 25 years of mental health and addictions experience to the table and works closely with clients at The Residence.

The third panelist will be Elke Rubach, President, Rubach Wealth – Holistic Family Advisors, a multi-family office in Toronto. She will provide insights into emotional well-being in the family office context.

Among the topics to be discussed:

  • The personality traits that typify high-performing individuals—and the implications for mental wellness.
  • Prevention strategies to cultivate resilience in people who are perpetually in high-stakes environments.
  • The unique emotional and mental health challenges that typically impact high performers.

The panel will be moderated by journalist Sarah Moore and presented by CFO’s Managing Editor, Joe Chidley.
